Ranging from 8- to 100-pin devices, AVR microcontrollers are well suited for applications such as PC fans up to highly advanced motor control applications. From ATtiny13 to AT90PWM3, designer can find a cost-effective solution for a variety of motor type and application complexity. AT90PWM3 is a microcontroller with an 8-bit AVR RISC architecture, 8 KB Bytes Flash, 512 Bytes RAM & EEPROM, 11-channel 10-bit ADC and a 10-bit DAC. The main feature that makes this device very well suited to motor control applications are the three Power Stage Controller (called PSC). The PSC has 6 synchronized PWM channels for 3 phase Motors and a fast emergency shut down of PWM outputs. A 64-MHz PLL provides a 12-bit PWM accuracy up to 16 KHz. There is a demo board available for the control of a brushless DC motor (order code ATAVRMC100) based on the AT90PWM3. It contains not only the board but also a DC motor and software examples.
