RL78/I1A DC/DC LED Control Demonstration Kit Makes It Easier For Developers To Design High-performance LED Drivers

Renesas RL78-I1A reference board

Stutensee (Germany) — MSC now offers the RL78/I1A DC/DC LED Control Demonstration Kit from Renesas Electronics. The new kit (part number Y-RL78-DCDC-LED) enables designers to simply and quickly learn about LED driver development.

The kit, which is based on the lighting-specific RL78/I1A microcontroller (MCU) family, contains the latest version of the Applilet EZ GUI software tool from Renesas Electronics. This tool enables very easy graphical configuration of an LED lighting system while also generating C code for the RL78/I1A MCU. Designers only need a USB cable to program the target device. Furthermore, using the Applilet EZ software tool, communication protocol stacks for DALI and DMX512 can be generated in a few seconds.

The evaluation board, which is equipped with DALI interface and DMX512 interface, IR remote control, analog control and a 38-pin R5F107DE microcontroller with 64 KB of flash memory, enables a programmable 3-channel LED constant 350 mA current control in buck converter topology. The 16-bit PWM timer of the R5F107DE works with a clock frequency of 64 MHz and, via a dithering function, improves the average resolution to less than 1 ns. In addition, a number of special analog peripheral circuits, such as a programmable gain amplifier and comparators, are integrated in the controller.

The IAR C-SPY debugger of the RL78/I1A DC/DC LED Control Evaluation Board, which is accessible via the USB interface, allows flash programming and supports standard debug functions such as code execution, single stepping, software breakpoints and memory manipulation. In addition, the board also supports debugging using the E1 emulator. Besides the IAR C-SPY debugger, the kit also contains the IAR Embedded Workbench for the RL78 MCU with a code size limitation of 16 KB.
