8-bit Microcontroller Family for Body Control Applications
id="8-bit"
 |
78K0F Series microcontrollers, based on a 0.15 µm flash process, are
available in four different packages (44-pin to 80-pin) and 13 different memory
options with up to 128 Kbytes (see 78K0/Fx2 features on page 2).
To comply with the European RoHS directive allcontrollers have lead-free
packages with NiPdAu plating. They tolerate operating temperatures up to 125° C
to cope with the harsh automotive environment conditions.
While the feature mix of 78K0F Series microcontrollers has been tailored to body
control applications, the versatile and powerful peripherals of the devices also
make them a good choice for chassis control and industrial applications that
require a CAN-bus interface.
|
|
78K0 core now at 20 MHz!
The new 0.15 ìm flash process has significantly improved the speed of the
78K0 core. 78K0F Series microcontrollers operate at clock rates of up to 20 MHz
resulting in a minimum instruction cycle time of 100 ns. While speed has
increased, current consumption hasn’t: the typical supply current of an 80-pin
FF2 controller with 128 K of memory is just 5.4 mA.
| |
Sophisticated clock system
Four different clock units are implemented:
Main clock unit driven by a standard crystal or
ceramic resonatort
32 kHz subclock unit (can be used to form a
real-time-clock using the on-chip watch timer)
High-speed 8 MHz onchipring oscillator
Low-speed 240 kHz onchipring oscillator
Just 20 µs after release of an internal reset the controller starts operating
using the internal 8 MHz clock. The internal low-speed ring oscillator (240
kHztyp.) cannot be used as CPU clock, but the window watchdog timer and one
8-bit timer can be operated from this clock. The window watchdog timer is thus
independent of the external mainclock and consequently continues to operate if
the crystal fails. This lowers the system cost because no external watchdog is
needed even if a high level of safety is required (see block diagram). The 78K0
F Series also has a power-on clear (POC) and a low-voltage indicator (LVI) unit
allowing further reduction of system cost.
|
Hardware multiplier on board
In addition to the multiply and divide instructions supported by the 78K0 CPU
core, F Series microcontrollers provide a hardware unit that performs 16 x
16-bit multiplications and 32 x 16-bit divisions. It takes just 0.8 ìs for a
multiplication and 1.6 ìs for a division. This makes the 78K0 F Series an
excellent choice for applications that require fast arithmetic capability that
usually calls for a 16-bit controller.
Plenty of timers
Apart from watch timer and window watchdog timer, up to four 16-bit and four
8-bit timers are provided. All 16-bit timers can cope with a maximum input clock
of 20 MHz. In other words, a resolution of 50 ns can be achieved. This is
particular important if a PWM frequency outside the audible range, say greater
than 20 kHz, needs to be generated. There are two kinds of 8-bit timer. The TMH
timers operate in output compare mode only, for instance as interval timers or
in PWM output mode. The TM50/51 timers additionally provide an event count mode.
The TM50 timer can be concatenated with TMH0 to form another 16-bit timer.

F
Series in automotive networking
Networking is nowadays a major topic in automotive applications. Apart from
the established CAN standard, the demand for a low-cost network with reduced
‘protocol overhead’ and related hardware resulted in a UART-based LIN bus (Local
Interconnect Network bus). Usually the LIN bus is a sub-network in a CAN
environment and some kind of gateway to CAN is required. NEC Electronics has
taken the trend of CAN to LIN gateway applications into account by implementing
state-of-theart CAN and LIN interface units in the 78K0 F Series.
|
F Series development tools
NEC Electronics provides off-the-shelf development tools such as software
tools, in-circuit-emulators, . ash programmers and lowbudget tools like starter
kits and on-chip debug emulators. The software development tools are based on
IAR’s proven Embedded Workbench for 78K. To get acquainted with the F Series,
NEC Electronics offers the ‘CAN it!’ demonstration kit. This demonstration kit
includes a code-size-limited (4 Kbytes) version of the IAR Embedded Workbench.

32-bit motor control speci. c microcontrollers. Targeted speci. cally at motor
control applications the MC-LVKIT is a complete evaluation kit which allows
designers to demonstrate and evaluate the CPU and motor control functions of
µPD78F0714 and V850ES/IK1 microcontrollers. Scalability guaranteed with the
ability to add other microcontroller boards in the future including V850/KJ1+,
V850E/IA4 and µPD78F0712. The hardware platform consists of a 12 V brushless DC
motor; Low voltage inverter module, I/O board and a microcontroller board. The
complete system can be connected to a PC via a serial interface or operated in
stand alone mode. It is also capable of being connected to NEC’s software
development tools for evaluation and debugging purposes.
| |
Low voltage inverter module
The low voltage inverter module can be used for low voltage motor
applications that require drive capability for motors up to 24 V. It can be used
for evaluating 3-phase asynchronous or synchronous motor control applications.
Input/output board
The I/O board has on-board user interface hardware for operational control
and signal conditioning between the MCU and the low voltage inverter module.
With this modular approach, a user can easily evaluate NEC Electronics’ 8- and
32-bit motor control MCUs. Other features of the I/O board include:
Potentiometer (to control the speed of the motor)
Pushbutton switches that can be reprogrammed by the
user (Start/stop, mode, forward, reverse)

ERTEC – Integrated Intelligent Switching
 |
NEC Electronics Europe have released two high speed Ethernet controllers that
support the PROFINET Isochronous Real Time protocol (IRT). Designed for
time-critical motion control applications the two ERTEC (Enhanced Real Time
Ethernet Controller) devices provide the highest degree of intelligence in the
smallest space with an integrated intelligent switch combined with a powerful
ARM946E-S processor. The ERTEC 400 is an Ethernet controller with integrated
4-port switch and PCI interface tailored to the power requirements of motion
control systems, while the ERTEC 200 is a lower cost controller with integrated
2-port switch and integrated Ethernet PHYs designed primarily for PROFINET IO
devices such as drive or sensor interfaces. Data through-put is guaranteed as
the performance matrix for the realtime communication allows control for up to
150 axis at a cycle time of 1 ms, with 6 megabytes per second of simultaneously
transferable standard TCP/IP data. Based on the IEEE 802.3 transmission
standard, the ERTEC devices support the PROFINET fieldbus protocol and time
stamping according to IEEE 1588.
|
Flexible
PROFINET is fully compatible with Ethernet TCP/IP standards, so it can easily
integrate with IT systems or any fieldbus protocol through proxies, and not just
PROFIBUS. PROFINET can handle data at three levels. The open TCP/IP channel
enables 100 ms cycle times, the Real Time channel enables 5 – 10 ms cycle times
and the Isochronous Real Time (IRT) channel enables cycle times below 1 ms.
Isochronous real time support
Isochronous means that the information delivered by an Ethernet frame to each
network component occurs at precisely the same time in each cycle. This requires
accurate synchronisation and very precise control of multiple synchronised data
streams. The IRT channels exist side by side with the open TCP/IP channel by
sharing the bandwidth and by marking the IRT frames with a special ‘Ethertype’
field. Using a time-slice system the IRT channel is divided into fixed time
slots, each representing an end device. IRT time-slice techniques cannot be
supported by standard Ethernet switches, so it requires dedicated hardware
support which is provided by ERTEC’s embedded IRT switch. ERTEC devices can far
outperform standard Ethernet switches and guarantee data throughput for hard
real-time critical motion control devices and still leave 50% of the bandwidth
for IT communication.
|
Deterministic
The switch uses cut-through and store/forward Ethernet switching methods to
move data around the network. When data arrives it is determined to be real-time
or non real-time (using the Ethertype identifier part of the PROFINET frame) the
device stores non real-time data for forwarding later and allows realtime data
to cut through and exit ahead of non-real time data. This provides a secure
method for priority passing of real-time data. Latency issues are also overcome
by the switch as it allows connected devices to measure the latency between
themselves and devices sending real-time data. The system becomes
self-compensating and remembers latency figures and adds it to any real-time
data received.
| |
ERTEC versatility
Beside their unique IRT switch architecture ERTEC 200/400 offer a set of
popular interfaces to SDRAM, SRAM, Flash memory, static IO devices, UARTs, SPIs,
external host controllers and PCI (only ERTEC 400). A large number of GPIO pins,
. exible timers and many con. guration options help ERTEC 200/400 . t smoothly
in almost any environment.
Development kits
ERTEC development kits provide everything that is required to build up a
PROFINET IRT communicationline: An ERTEC evaluation board and an industry
standard PROFINET IRT controller communicate using a ready-to-use PROFINET IO
device stack software. The use of TORNADO, the graphical IDE for the VxWorks OS
allows customers to add their applications easily on top of the OS framework.
This configuration allows shortest development cycles and minimum engineering
resource consumption.

Minimal self-discharge and 40% less weight
|
Lithium ion-manganese battery packs with capacities from 600 mAh up to 200 Ah
are now extending the distribution portfolio of Gleichmann Electronics. The
battery packs are developed and manufactured by Batterien-Montage- Zentrum (BMZ)
and feature approximately 40% less weight compared to nickel cadmium or nickel
metal hybrid battery packs. For example: a 14,4V-battery pack with 3 Ah of
capacity has a weight of only 540 gram. Another advantage of the lithium ion
manganese battery packs is that their full capacity remains available over 1000
charge and discharge cycles. Even after 1 year without usage these battery packs
keeps nearly the full capacity; to discharge it without usage takes as long as 4
to 5 years.
The specific energy of the lithium ion manganese battery packs of 90 Wh/kg to
120 Wh/kg is twice as high as the speci. c energy of nickel cadmium battery
packs with a comparable capacity. These newly developed battery packs provide a
nearly constant output voltage over the entire discharge period which extends
the nominal voltage of 3,6V per battery pack.
The environment-friendly lithium ion manganese battery packs are usable in
the temperature range from -20°C to +70°C.
